Aliens: Beyond Western Christendom

Mohammad Jabali's lecture from Tohu Magazine conference - Space is the Place: Afrofuturism, Arabfuturism and the Search for New Dimensions

Combining postcolonial theory with science fiction and visual culture, Muhammad Jabali showcases the images of Muslims and the Orient in Western science fiction, and goes on to discuss Arab pulp fiction and modern Arabfuturism. Jabali addresses what he perceives as the main problem with Arabfuturism – the inability to produce an imagination that lies outside the axioms of history, time, space, and the socio-political configurations of Western Christendom. Jabali calls for an imagination that would surpass these barriers, be it futurism or speculative futuristic art.
